LANTRA 4×4
LANTRA 4×4 Off Road Driver Trainers

LANTRA approved instructors have all undertaken a series of examinations to ensure that they are qualified to provide the training they offer.
This includes an examination of their abilities in the field in which they train, instructional techniques courses and first aid qualifications.
LANTRA 4×4 trainers are not required to be DSA ADIs, however any training in category B vehicles must be carried out by DSA ADIs. We only recommend training providers who use DSA ADIs. This ensures that training is legal and carried out under full insurance.
LANTRA trainers who are not DSA ADIs cannot provide any category B driver training and though some LANTRA trainers do offer training in normal 4×4’s - this is not legal and may not be covered by their professional indemnity insurances - all trainers involved with this site are both DSA and LANTRA approved instructors.
(There are legal issues which mean that many off-road driving courses are being offered illegally - though some of these courses are run by highly qualified professionals we cannot recommend them.)
LANTRA is also the only Off Road Training whose instructors are regularly inspected to ensure that their courses meet current Health & Safety requirements. Other off road training providers offer occupational training, though their regulation is nowhere near as strict or demanding as that of LANTRA.
Training to be a 4×4 trainer or off road instructor:
Training to be an off road instructor is offered by many companies, though the legality of these courses falls into a grey area - anyone who trains someone in the use of a car (any 4×4 with more than 3 seats may be classed as a car) must be a qualified DSA ADI before offering any training.
For DSA ADIs who are considering training to be off road 4×4 instructors there are several options, though for the reasons laid out above we can only recommend becoming LANTRA 4×4 instructors. The route is laid out on the LANTRA site (become a LANTRA instructor) and begins with becoming a qualified 4×4 operator. If you would like a personal perspective of the process have a look at Becoming a 4×4 off-road instructor.
